5 common misconceptions about linen sheets
Posted: 05 March 2025
At I Love Linen, we live and breathe linen. Linen sheets, linen pyjamas, linen robes, the whole lot. It’s the ticket to a better night's sleep while being a timeless staple in your home
However, if you’ve never slept on linen sheets, you might have a few hesitations…
But we’re here to put those worries to bed.
At the heart of everything we do is great sleep, so we don’t want you missing out. Let’s break down five common misconceptions about linen bedding and set you up for your dreamiest sleep yet.
Myth 1: Linen is expensive
The truth: While linen sheets do cost more upfront than standard cotton sheets, we consider them an investment.
Cheaper fabrics wear out quickly, but linen gets softer with every wash. Plus, linen sheets naturally regulate your temperature, so you can use them all year round.
Investing in linen means choosing something that gets better with time. And if you like switching up your style, a double-sided quilt cover gives you two looks in one.
Myth 2: Linen is rough and scratchy
The truth: If you’ve ever slept on rough linen sheets before, chances are they weren’t ours. Our linen is pre-washed and made from high-quality long-staple yarns, sourced from France, where they’re known for their high-quality flax.
We’ve spent years perfecting our fabric so you can enjoy soft linen from the very first night.
Myth 3: Linen wrinkles too much
The truth: Linen has a naturally crumpled texture, and that’s part of its charm. If you’re after a perfectly smooth bed, linen might not be for you, but if you like an effortless, lived-in, wrinkled duvet cover look, it’s perfect.
Bonus: you get a no iron duvet cover!
Myth 4: Linen is hard to care for
The truth: Linen is actually one of the easiest fabrics to care for (we have a whole blog on linen washing instructions here).
In short, when washing linen sheets, stick to cold/lukewarm water and a gentle detergent, and skip the fabric softeners. Remember, linen’s natural fibres are strong and get better with wear.
Myth 5: Linen colours fade or look different in real life
The truth: We take coloured bed linen seriously, selecting shades that'll last and look perfect in your home. But, of course, proper care makes a difference. We recommend cold washes, gentle detergents, and drying in the shade to help preserve the colour of your linen sheets.
To be as sustainable as possible, we choose not to use formaldehyde to set our dyes (fewer toxins against your skin). Although that means there's a chance the colour may soften over time, we see this as part of linen’s charm.
